Through this website we drew on many resources to provide a complete history of Erie County’s buildings, historic sites, and historic events. Here are some of the resources that used. Most of these sources are available either online or at area libraries. With increased interest in local history, it is apparent that this list will never be completely up to date. It is, however, a great starting point for exploring the rich history of our county.
ERIE COUNTY
Aldrich, Lewis Cass, History of Erie County Ohio, D. Mason & Co. Publishers, Syracuse, New York, 1889. This History of Erie County includes a history of each township of with a focus on the City of Sandusky including biographies of many of its leading citizens.
Combination Atlas Map of Erie County, Ohio: Compiled, Drawn and Published From Personal Examinations and Surveys, Stewart & Page, Philadelphia, 1874.The 1874 Erie County Atlas includes a history of Erie County and detailed maps of each township and of all of the towns and villages in the county.
Peeke, Hewson L., A Standard History of Erie County, Ohio, 2 Vols., The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago and New York, 1916. Hewson Peeke was the premier Erie County Historian in his day and his books on the history of the county including the sections on Sandusky are outstanding. The book contains extensive biographies of many of the key players in the history of Sandusky and Erie County.
Peeke, Hewson L., The Centennial History of Erie County, Ohio, 2 Vols., The Cleveland Press Company, Cleveland, Ohio, 1925. This is an updated version of Peeke’s Standard History of Erie County.

The Firelands Pioneer, The Firelands Historical Society, Norwalk, Ohio, Old Series – Vols. 1-13, 1858-1878, New Series – Vols. 1-25, 1882-1937. This periodical is the primary source for the early history of Erie County and Huron Counties. It includes a detailed index and biographical information on the many of the key players in the early history of the area.
Hildebrandt, H. John, and Marie Hildebrandt, Lake Erie’s Shores and Islands, Arcadia Publishing, 2015. A history of tourism and recreation in the area, including Erie and Ottawa counties, primarily told through archival images.
Hayes Presidential Center – www.rbhayes.org The Hayes Presidential Library has an extensive collection of books, documents, and photographs relating to Erie County. The library and its outstanding website are well worth a visit.
Williams, W.W., History of the Fire Lands, Comprising Huron and Erie Counties, Ohio with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of the Prominent Men and Pioneers, Press of Leader Printing Company, Cleveland, Ohio, 1879. This book includes a history of the Firelands, histories of each township, histories of all the towns on the Firelands and biographies of early settlers.

Francis, David W. and Diane DeMali Francis, Cedar Point: The Queen of American Watering Places, Amusement Park Books, Inc., Fairview Park, Ohio, 1988,2004 and 2009. These books, written by the late David Francis and his wife, Diane, in three editions, is currently the best and most comprehensive history of the amusement park, combining archival photographs with a well-researched narrative.

Frohman, Charles E., Sandusky’s Editor, The Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, Ohio, 1968. This book offers a view of the history of Sandusky through the eyes of Isaac Foster Mack Jr. the owner and editor of the Sandusky Register from 1869-1909.
Frohman, Charles E., Sandusky’s Yesterdays, Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, Ohio, 1968. Charles Frohman was the last president of the Hinde and Dauch Company and served a term as president of the Ohio Historical Society. He amassed a large collection of books, newspaper files, photographs, and documents relating to the history of Erie County and Sandusky that is housed at the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio. This books contains a detailed history of the Sandusky Region in the years prior to its settlement and describes the founding of Sandusky and various topics in the town’s history.
Frohman, Charles E., History of Sandusky and Erie County, The Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, Ohio, 1965. This short, sixty-page book is a well-illustrated account of the founding of Sandusky with sections on selected topics in the city’s history.

Hansen, Helen, At Home in Early Sandusky, Sandusky Register, Sandusky, Ohio, 1975. This well-illustrated book is based upon the “Stately Old Homes” series which was published by the Sandusky Register. It includes detailed information on many of the older homes still standing in Sandusky.
Hansen, Helen & Virginia Steinemann, From the Widow’s Walk: A View of Sandusky, Sandusky Library and Follett House Museum, Sandusky, Ohio, Vol. 1, 1991. The beautifully illustrated book is based upon a series of illustrated articles entitled “Follett House Scrapbook” that appeared in the Sandusky Register in the years 1987, 1988, 1989 & 1990.
Hansen, Helen, & Virginia Steinemann, From the Widow’s Walk: A View of Sandusky, Sandusky Library and Follett House Museum, Sandusky, Ohio, Vol. 2, 1996. A continuation of the previous book with articles that appeared in the Sandusky Register through 1996.
Historical Sketch and Official Souvenir Program of the 100th Anniversary of the Incorporation of the City of Sandusky, Centennial Executive Committee, Sandusky, 1924. This well-illustrated program includes both a great deal of information on the early history of Sandusky and a view of the city in its centennial year.
Martin, William T., Our Old Town As She Used t’ Be, Pageant Press, New York, New York, 1959. This amusing book offers the reader a view of Sandusky through the eyes of William Martin who was born in Sandusky in 1889. It covers the period from his birth to approximately 1910.
Root, W.D., City Guide and Business Directory: First Annual Issue, Steam Press of Bill, Cooke & Co. Register Office, Sandusky 1855. W.D. Root begins this, the first Sandusky City Directory with the first published history of the town.

This book originally published in German as “Sandusky Einst und Jetzt“ provides is a detailed history of Sandusky’s German Community and its many contributions to the development of Sandusky.
