August H. Moss was a prosperous banker and merchant. He lived in this grandiose mansion built for him in 1842, residing near prominent Sanduskians such as Oran Follett, Lester Hubbard, and J. O. Moss. Jay O. Moss. Jay O. Moss was the son of Augustus Moss and was the president of the B & O railroad at one time.  His wife and mother were instrumental in gathering the group of ladies who secured funds from Andrew Carnegie to go towards the building of a public library in Sandusky, Ohio.

August Moss House - Erie County Ohio Historical SocietyThis expansive, elegant home is an example of Gothic Revival Architecture. Originally the house had small paned windows and a balcony over the front entry. The glass windows and porch were added near the end of the nineteenth century.
